From 2007 to 2011, iESF extended into the virtual world Second Life, where Christopher (as “Shamblesguru Voom”) built a vibrant 3D learning space used by educators and students across the globe. Long before Zoom became a classroom staple, Second Life offered real-time collaboration, simulations, and cross-border community in ways few had imagined.
Workshops, virtual field trips, and teacher meetups all took place inside this rich online world, reflecting iESF’s commitment to experimenting with emerging technologies. Though Second Life eventually dropped down from our iESF priorities, the lessons learned about presence, interaction, and imagination still inform how we think about virtual learning environments today.
